Bradford, UK – The announcement by the Chief Adviser to Bangladesh’s interim government regarding Myanmar’s identification of 180,000 Rohingya refugees as eligible for repatriation is being met with cautious optimism. However, the Rohingya Centre UK (RCUK) stresses that repatriation is not simply a matter of returning refugees, but of ensuring that they are returned with full rights, dignity, and safety.
Dr. Mohammad Khubybe, Chief Operating Officer of RCUK, stated: “The recognition of 180,000 refugees as eligible for repatriation is a step forward, but it must not be seen as the final solution. Repatriation must involve the restoration of citizenship, rights, and security for the Rohingya. Without these guarantees, it will be an incomplete and unjust process.”
Mohammed Amin, CEO of RCUK, added: “Repatriation cannot take place under the current conditions in Rakhine State, where the Rohingya face continued persecution and intensity. Any return must ensure the safety and full rights of the Rohingya people. We call on Bangladesh, Myanmar and the international community to ensure that these conditions are met.”
RCUK remains committed to advocating for the safe, voluntary, and dignified repatriation of all Rohingya refugees, grounded in justice and the full restoration of their rights and citizenship.
