RCUK condemns escalating violence and attacks on Rohingya civilians in Myanmar

Mohammed Amin, CEO of RCUK, has condemned the recent attacks by the Arakan Army (AA) in Rakhine State on Rohingya civilians. The escalating violence, including indiscriminate drone strikes on civilian areas, is unacceptable and constitutes a grave violation of human rights.

On 5 August 2024, the AA launched a devastating attack involving 20 rockets and a dozen drones, resulting in the deaths of at least 300 people, including children. This brutal escalation has forced over 2,000 Rohingya civilians to flee their homes, seeking refuge along the banks of the Naff River, Cox’s Bazar as they attempt to cross into Bangladesh for safety.

Mr Amin highlighted that the lack of effective response from the world leaders have left the Rohingya community in a state of fear and despair. The situation is exacerbated by the absence of international protection and adequate humanitarian support.

The Bradford Rohingya community is particularly concerned for their family members and loved ones in Myanmar, experiencing heightened distress as the violence continues to escalate.

RCUK calls on global leaders, including the UK government, to address this escalating crisis and take immediate action to safeguard the lives of Rohingya civilians in Myanmar.

RCUK remains committed to advocating for the rights and safety of the Rohingya people and will continue to monitor and report on the evolving situation in Myanmar. We encourage individuals to seek assistance and connect with us and other local organisations offering support during this challenging time.
