Overview
For generations, Rohingya children have been denied access to education. Displacement, statelessness, and exclusion have left millions without safe, meaningful learning opportunities. Education is not optional. It is a fundamental human right, essential for child protection, dignity, and long-term recovery.
Through Educate Rohingya Children, the Rohingya Centre of the United Kingdom (RCUK) delivers education through the Rohingya Education System (RES)—a community-led approach designed and delivered by Rohingya educators, with the support of the National Education Union (NEU), to meet the real needs of children both inside and beyond refugee camps.
Our Aims
We want to ensure that every Rohingya child can learn, grow, and feel safe, regardless of legal status or location. Our work focuses on closing generational education gaps and equipping children with the skills, confidence, and hope needed to shape their own futures.

Insights
- An estimated 500,000 Rohingya children face severe barriers to education due to displacement, persecution, and statelessness.
- 60% of these children, especially girls, are out of school, facing risks like forced marriage and exploitation.
- Millions of Rohingya children have been deprived of basic literacy and numeracy skills.
- Older children and adolescents are at risk of becoming a “lost generation”, vulnerable to trafficking and long-term marginalisation.
What We Do
Rohingya Education System
- Support Rohingya-led learning centres that reflect Rohingya language, culture, and values.
- Reach children in Bangladesh who are excluded from formal education systems, including those living outside refugee camps.
- Train and mentor Rohingya teachers and education workers to strengthen community capacity.
- Develop an integrated system across Rohingya refugee communities that includes a formal curriculum, teaching standards, assessment, enrolment, and education management.
- Advocate nationally and internationally for education as a protected human right for Rohingya children.

Why This Matters
Education protects children from exploitation, early marriage, and child labour, supports trauma recovery, and fosters confidence and resilience. For the Rohingya community, education is a pathway to leadership, self-reliance, and dignity.
This work contributes to Vision 2030, RCUK’s long-term commitment to ensuring Rohingya children are educated, empowered, and ready to shape their future.
