The Rohingya Centre UK (RCUK), as a leading voice for the Rohingya diaspora in the UK and beyond, expresses profound appreciation for the recent interventions in the landmark case of Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (The Gambia v. Myanmar) at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). These significant actions mark important progress in the global pursuit of justice and accountability for the Rohingya people, reinforcing international legal norms and emphasising collective responsibility.
Slovenia’s intervention highlights the proactive role of smaller states in defending human rights, while the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s (DRC) involvement adds a vital perspective, informed by its own history of mass atrocities. Together, these contributions enhance the Court’s deliberations and strengthen the legal mechanisms necessary to address and prevent genocide.
On November 22, 2024, Slovenia submitted a declaration of intervention under Article 63 of the Statute of the Court, joining a coalition of states committed to the principles of the Genocide Convention. On December 11, 2024, the Democratic Republic of the Congo followed suit, further fortifying this united front. These interventions complement those made by Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, the Maldives, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.
Call to Action for the International Community
As the ICJ continues its deliberations, RCUK urges the following:
- Sustained Engagement: Continued support for the ICJ proceedings to ensure a fair and comprehensive legal outcome.
- Enforcement of Compliance: Holding Myanmar accountable for adhering to the ICJ’s provisional measures.
- Collaborative Solutions: Advocacy for humanitarian aid, sustainable solutions, creating a safe zone and the safe return of displaced Rohingya.
RCUK remains committed to fostering global dialogue and policy engagement to address the crisis, working alongside governments and international organisations to shape sustainable solutions. We extend our gratitude to Slovenia, the DRC, and all intervening states for their courage and commitment to justice, contributing to the global effort to end impunity.
Together, we can ensure accountability and work towards a future where atrocities are never repeated, and the principles of justice and humanity prevail. RCUK stands ready to collaborate in these efforts for lasting peace and dignity for the Rohingya people.
