The Rohingya Centre United Kingdom (RCUK) welcomes the inclusion of the Rohingya among the top six refugee populations identified in UNHCR’s 2026 Projected Global Resettlement Needs Report, with 233,300 Rohingya refugees in need of international protection and durable solutions.
This recognition reflects the grave and ongoing situation of Rohingya refugees—stateless, displaced, and denied fundamental rights many of whom remain in long-term displacement across Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Thailand, and other transit countries. They face serious risks including detention, trafficking, exploitation, and the absence of legal status.
While the UK has shown commendable leadership in refugee protection, we note with concern the projected reduction in UK resettlement places to their lowest level in two decades. At this critical juncture, it is vital to ensure that stateless and vulnerable groups like the Rohingya are not left behind.
RCUK urges the UK Government to consider the following practical steps:
- Establish a dedicated resettlement quota for Rohingya refugees under the UK Resettlement Scheme (UKRS), with prioritisation of those currently in Bangladesh, Malaysia, and Indonesia, where protection risks are most acute.
- Allocate a proportion of annual UKRS places for stateless Rohingya families, recognising their legal invisibility and vulnerability under international refugee and statelessness frameworks.
- Expand the Community Sponsorship Programme to allow organisations like RCUK to directly support the resettlement and integration of Rohingya families in the UK.
- Improve access to Refugee Family Reunion routes for Rohingya already residing in the UK, enabling safe, legal reunification with close family members abroad.
As a Rohingya-led organisation based in the UK, RCUK stands ready to collaborate with the UNHCR, UK Home Office, local authorities, and wider partners to support the successful resettlement, reception, and integration of Rohingya refugees into British society.
A dedicated resettlement quota for Rohingya refugees would provide a vital humanitarian lifeline to one of the world’s most at-risk stateless communities and reinforce the UK’s commitment to safe and legal migration pathways.
